Workshop Schedule

The workshop begins at 9am and goes until 6pm. It will consist of four time sections divided by a series of breaks and lunch. We plan for the workshop to be highly interactive.

The following contains specific schedule details though it is subject to change.

Preparation

Prior to the workshop you should do the following:

  1. Prepare an 4-5 minute presentation of your work. Please ensure your presentation is 5 minutes or less as we have tight time restrictions. We will have a digital projector for the presentations. Include:
    • A description of the application space
    • The methodological tools used
    • The challenges faced in moving from contextual analysis to design
    • Solutions, if any, that have been used to overcome these challenges
  2. Prepare to talk about your research informally
  3. Read the workshop papers of the other workshop participants

9-10:30 am | Presentations

A selection of attendees will provide 4-5 minute presentations of their research or design work. Here they will identify the methodological tools they typically use, their focus on user requirements analysis, design, or both, and challenges they face in moving from contextual understanding to design.

We will select presenters who will provide a broad range of application areas, methodologies, and perspectives. These presentations will foster discussion points for synthesis discussions later in the day.

At the completion of each presentation, as a group we will identify the presenters’ answers to each of the workshop's focal issues: contextual analysis artifacts, design artifacts, and bridging the gap.

10:30-11am | Coffee Break

11-12:30 | Presentations

Presentations will continue for the remaining participants.

12:30-2:00 | Lunch

We will make a reservation at a nearby restaurant. Please let us know if you cannot make it, otherwise we will assume everyone is coming.

2:00-3:30 | Discussion and Synthesis

Attendees will come together and the organizers will lead a discussion around the variety of methodologies and tools that participants use to bridge the gap between contextual analysis and design. This will involve some affinity diagramming (or similar) analysis activities to distill the findings from the presentations. Participants will attempt to find commonalities in approaches and limitations with methods. This should lead to new perspectives on how to bridge the gap.

3:30-4 | Break

4-5 | Discussion and Synthesis

We will continue the discussion that was started in the previous time slot.
