Dr. Carman Neustaedter (he/him/his) is Dean of the Faculty of Communication, Art, and Technology (FCAT, and Professor in the School of Interactive Arts and Technology (SIAT) at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, Canada.   As Dean of FCAT, he oversees three schools and two programs at SFU: the School for the Contemporary Arts (SCA), the School of Communication (CMNS), the School of Interactive Arts and Technology (SIAT), the Publishing program (PUB), and the Masters in Digital Media program (MDM).  Dr. Neustaedter has extensive administrative experience including chairing and being a member of numerous University level committees (e.g., co-chair of SFU Senior Leadership Team Committee, member of Senate and the Senate Committee on University Priorities). He has been on committees for 7 executive member searches (e.g., Provost, Deans, Executive Directors) and was a member of the SFU President’s Reappointment Committee (2023).  As Dean, Dr. Neustaedter has hired over 22 faculty members in varied disciplines.

Dr. Neustaedter is an international expert in human-computer interaction and computer-supported collaboration. He leads the Connections Lab (cLab, – an elite research team of aspiring superheroes that aims to create better technologies for connecting people over distance. Dr. Neustaedter and his team research the design and use of technologies for family communication, workplace collaboration over distance, and game play (e.g., escape rooms, pervasive games). This includes research on telepresence technologies, such as video conferencing systems, telepresence robots, and media spaces.  Dr. Neustaedter has published over 260 scholarly publications and has a h-index of 51 and i10-index of 158 (as of Nov 5, 2023).  He has supervised over 20 graduate students to completion as supervisor or co-supervisor, over 30 graduate students as a committee member, and over 35 undergraduate student researchers.
