Industry
My research group and I actively collaborate with industry. This research is supported by NSERC, MITACS, and/or industrial sponsorship. We perform two types of work with industrial partners:
1) Foundational research to help guide future product direction. Here we study the routines and needs of people along with their existing usage of technology. This leads to an understanding of where technology is cumbersome to use or where new technologies would be valued. This type of research is something that many companies cannot do on their own since they don’t have a purely academic research department.
2) The design, development and evaluation of new computational systems. If companies can afford to have an R&D department, they can do this on their own. However, we can typically do it for a lot less money since it is a learning experience for students and they are being trained as part of the process. We can also apply for research grants that match industrial funds.
